Dr. Wayne Gallops

Conductor, Educator, and ARC Recording Artist - Dr. R. Wayne Gallops serves as Director of Bands and Music Education at Radford University. His responsibilities include conducting the University Wind Ensemble, Chamber Winds, Symphonic Band, and coordination of the Music Education degree program. Prior to his appointment at Radford University, Dr. Gallops served on the faculties of The University of Tampa, The University of South Florida, and Hillsborough Community College. For nineteen years, Dr. Gallops taught in the Hillsborough County Public Schools (Tampa, Florida.). His high school bands presented outstanding performances at Florida Bandmasters Association district and state festivals, the Bands of America National Concert Band Festival, toured Japan, and consistently received national and international acclaim. Dr. Gallops is active throughout the United States and Canada as a conductor, clinician, adjudicator, and arranger. As a keyboard artist (piano/organ), he performs and records with numerous professional classical, jazz, commercial ensembles, and performing artists; has toured throughout the United States, Canada, and Japan; and conducts for various theater, opera, and ballet companies – including the Florida Lyric Opera, The Broadway Theater Project, and Radford University Ballet Theater productions of “The Nutcracker”. His 2008 solo CD release ‘Jazzicale’ received international critical acclaim and is scheduled for re-release through the ARC label. 

Wayne is also a member of the RU Faculty Jazz Quartet and The Pandemusicum Ensemble. Dr. Gallops' research interests explore musician response to conducting gesture and philosophical issues germane to music education in secondary schools. His writings are published in numerous peer review publications and he has presented clinics, lectures, and performances at many regional, national and international music conferences. Dr. Gallops served on the VMEA Executive Board as College Section President, the United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro Grant Review Panel, and is honored through membership in Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Who’s Who Among American Teachers, Outstanding Young Men of America, and Citations of Excellence from the National Band Association for outstanding contribution to bands, wind music, and instrumental music education. Dr. Gallops holds degrees from Hillsborough Community College (A.A.), The University of Tampa (B.A.), Florida State University (M.M.E.), and The University of South Florida (Ph.D.). 

He currently resides with family in Roanoke, Virginia and serves as resident organist/accompanist for the First Presbyterian Church (Roanoke, VA).
